JD Tyres bag last promotion berth on final night of Honiton Winter Netball league

16:28 11 March 2014

The last games have been played in the Honiton and District Winter netball League, writes Graham Ingram.

The final game of the season in the top division very nearly provided an upset when Flamingos met Uplowman.

With Viv Grant in great form Uplowman started strongly and led 12-8 at quarter time, 23 -21 at half way and were still 36-34 ahead going into the final period. With Sonia Yorke in determined mood for Flamingos they fought back to finally move in front and take the game by 47-44.

In Division Two the final night of action began with three teams in with a chance of promotion.

Pixies chance of gaining the top flight ended when they suffered defeat at the hand of Howden Hawks by 26-23. With Zoe Dunn in good form the Hawks were in the lead from the start and although Zara Benson worked hard for Pixies they could not gain control and their defeat ended their promotion chances. JD Tyres knew that a point would be good enough to ensure the top flight next season, but they were up against Tip Top Trees, the already promoted division champions. 3Ts were in control from the off and the 32-16 win for Trees denied JD the point and left the Tyres hanging on the result of the Otter Valley Dairy game against Blackdown Ladies. OVD knew that they needed the three points – and a big win to stand a chance of promotion. With Rose Cooke playing well for Blackdown the Dairy side had to work hard but Pippa Wyatt ensured the points for OVD with a 32-13 win, but it was good enough to get them third place, but not good enough to gain them promotion. JD finished in second place by virtue of their superior goal difference, one of plus 57 against the OVD offering of plus 40.

Results.

Division 1: Flamingos 47, Uplowman 44.

Division 2: Tip Top Trees 32, JD Tyres 16; Otter Valley Dairy 32, Blackdown Ladies 13; Pixies 23, Howden Hawks 26.
