AXMINSTER’S lady bowlers again excelled in their Foxlands County League game against Budleigh with a superb 87-52 win, writes David Harris.

Both home rinks of Phil White, Barbara Mowatt, Marion Harris, and Sheila Martin (29-11) and Brenda Edwards, Joyce Copp, Judith Moffit, and Jan Parsons (19-9) and the away rink of Sheila Cox, Alison Glyde, Ann Clayton, and Nola Stephens (25-12) gained excellent wins. The ladies' captain, Jean Kesterton, was understandably thrilled with the effort and team spirit again shown by her team.

Unfortunately, the Honiton Ladies were unable to raise a side for their friendly match with their Axminster counterparts.

In the mixed friendlies, Axminster enjoyed three good home wins. Firstly against the Nomads (60-54) with a winning rink of Les Monk, Pam Clark, Jean Kesterton, and Margaret Crompton (26-12), then against Sidmouth (69-44) with winning rinks of Brian Clark, David Harris, Malcolm Denslow, and Neil Solomon (40-7) and Mike Preston, Alan Preece, Howard Keep, and Eric Skeemer (20-10), and finally against Bridport (73-44) with wins on all three rinks - June Teale, Pam Hunter, Jan Parsons, and Brian Clark (28-8), Les Monk, Ann Clayton, Marion Harris, and Brian Parsons (25-7), and Phil White, David Harris, Alan Preece, and Margaret Crompton (20-19).

In their County games the men again failed to impress, losing narrowly to Kingsley (67-73) in the Over-60s league despite a good win for Bob Sherborne, Peter Eagles, Ken Hickman, and Don Meyland (23-12) in the home leg, and then losing on all rinks against Isca in the Interclub League (71-97).

The men also lost at home to a strong Devon Presidents side (54-66) in a friendly game with their best effort coming from Tony Payne, William Cook, Neil Soloman, and Brian Parsons who managed a 24-24 tie.
