A late goal from Emma Adams gave Honiton Hornets victory in their first league game of the season last Saturday away to Torbay, writes Lucy Le Cocq.

This was a good game with four new players making their debut and one of them, Laura Frank, got the opening goal.

The game got off to a good start with both teams attacking and defending strongly in the first 10 minutes. Honiton had several chances including short corners but couldn’t seem to get any past Torbay’s strong keeper. Towards the end of the first half, a drive from the midfield provided a chance. The ball rebounded from the keeper giving new player Laura Frank time and space to execute an excellent shot, at speed, into the back of the net. All were relieved at the half time whistle to get a break from the heat and regroup.

In the second half Honiton made better use of the width of the pitch and strung together some good phases of play. Torbay, though, equalised. Honiton’s defence worked hard, some of them out of their normal positions, to keep the score line 1-1 and eight minutes later great team work got a goal. Sophie George got a touch but the ball was veering wide. Emma Adams, who was positioned perfectly on the post, slotted the ball behind the keeper.
