Tiverton Town 1, Feniton 2
Feniton served up a superb all-round performance to deservedly inflict defeat on a much-fancied Tiverton Town Reserves side.
The game was played on the superb surface at Ladysmead, Tiverton and the Blues clearly enjoyed using the wide open spaces of the Mid Devon pitch as they looked to get the ball down and wide throughout the contest.
It was the home side who scored first, taking a 20th minute lead with a shot from the edge of the area that gave a fully stretched Matt Kingdon in the Blues’ goal no chance. Parity was restored prior to half-time thanks to a fine individual goal from Danny Lewis who picked the ball up wide, eased his way past a couple of defenders and then cut inside before rifling the ball home. It might have been an even healthier picture for the Blues at the break had the home keeper not produced a stunning save to keep out a Paul Dowling effort.
The second half produced more of the same with both sides looking to play a passing game. The decisive passage of play came midway through the second half. A Tiverton raid was thwarted by a splendid Kingdon save and, within a minute, the ball was nestling in the home net after a swift counter that ended with Paul Dowling crossing and Danny Lewis heading home at the far post. The Blues looked for a match sealing third and were denied by the depth of the cross bar when a Ben Allen shot cannoned back off the frame of the goal. The victory was enjoyed by all, and in particular by the Feniton left back! Phil Everett will always be regarded as a Tivvy legend for his long service to the Mid Devon club and he was superb throughout.
Boss Mark Kingdon said: “It was a very accomplished performance from all involved. We are back into a good place and the encouraging thing for me is that we are still not at full strength with the likes of Andy Jones still to make his first appearance of the season. We have certainly made the sort of start I’d not have thought possible in late summer when we were not quite sure just what sort of squad we’d have this season. The players are all champing tag the bit now and the games could not come quick enough.”
