This has been a very successful week for the Lyme Regis Bowls Club, writes Paul Moffitt.
Not only have the ladies managed to avoid relegation, but the men have regained there slot in the Championship league.
From what looked like a hopeless case for the ladies, they managed a whitewash over visiting Sherborne who were already firmly settled in the relegation slot. Lyme’s nearest rivals, Wellworthy, somehow managed to drop 10 points against Dorchester thus leaving the Lyme ladies the challenge of securing four points away to Greenhill in order to avoid the drop!
Winning away to Greenhill is never an easy task but, the ladies put in a barnstorming performance to get all 10 points on offer and thus secure a further season in the top echelon.
The men, having lost badly to Bridport last week, had left themselves the unenviable task of securing at least seven points against mid-table Portland Victoria in the last game of the season. What a turnaround from last week.
The squad played with flair and conviction and humbled Portland Victoria with a 10 point drubbing. This means that the men will also be back in the top echelon for next season.
Added to these successes, was a fine win in the Dorset Women’s Bowling League Drawn Pairs competition by Nola Stephens and Diana Courtenay-Smith. They overcame very strong opposition from Broadstone in the semi’s to squeeze home by 13-12. The final proved to be a little easier when the Lyme pair eased past Swanage to secure the title.
It’s been a busy week on the friendly front, played four but only managed one win.
