Three of the Honiton four Sun Am quarter finals were decided at a canter, but the fourth turned out to be a battle Royal of Ryder Cup proportions, writes Andy Wagner.

Fought under amicable circumstances it became apparent very early that it was to be a serious contest. Julian Netherway and Derek Richards took the first hole from John Marchant and Andy Wagner with an opening birdie three.

They then lost the second to par, but regained the third with another birdie. So the match went on until Wagner and Marchant got their noses in front at last on the 15th.

Dramatically they held this one hole lead all the way to the 18th where Wagner had a six-foot’ putt to close the game.

It lipped out leaving Richards with a similar putt to take the hole and halve the match. It was slotted home with confidence and relief leaving the teams to start all over again down the first.

This time, holes one and two were halved with nervy pars with the dramatic finale coming on the third extra hole!

Wagner and Marchant contrived to get closest after three shots leaving Julian Netherway with a 20’ putt from the fringe to keep the game alive.

He raced it, jammed the flag and sunk it for a four. Now it was Marchant who had six-foot putt halve the hole. Unfortunately the pressure told and he slid it narrowly down the side. Game over!

The semi finals will now be Julian Netherway and Derek Richards playing Richard Beard and Steve Charlton with Mark Gillard and Rob Willey playing Bob Cleal and Jim Wallis.
