Exmouth Colts 12, Honiton Colts 8
Honiton Colts arrived at Exmouth for an earlier than usual kick-off, and as such the warm up was cut short due to the pitch availability, writes Paz Parratt.
With the Lacemen’s squad lacking in numbers and the Cockles fielding a full compliment the game looked to be an uphill battle.
From the off the visitor’s looked sharp in all departments and Harry Wright slotted an early penalty to give then Lacemen the lead.
The Cockles were quick to answer and, from the back of a ruck, the ball was span out quickly to find the line following some good set play.
The conversion also landed leaving a small deficit to find from the lacemen.
The small squad available from Honiton done very well to keep the home side at bay for long periods of play, but some lapse defence allowed the home side in again to take the score 12 -3 going in to the break.
The second half was started with what looked to be a different Honiton squad and they appeared confident and looking to take control.
As the home side chose to play attacking rugby, Honiton had to defend and with what appeared to be a brick wall the Exmouth Colts simply could not penetrate the game line.
The Lacemen started to take more control from both the forwards and backs, holding their own in open play, rucks and mauls.
Honiton were able to peel off one such maul and Finn Parratt burst through the home sides defence to run in their first and only try of the match.
With 10 minutes of play left on the clock, both sides threw everything they had at each other.
Territory and possession were equal and both teams looked as if a score was on the cards more than once.
Chris Lynch looked sure to cross the whitewash for the Lacemen but again good defence from the home side kept him at bay two-metres out following a long distance run.
The game closed following that passage of play 12-8 to the home side in what was a very close and entertaining match.
Man of the Match went to Cody Northcott for his sheer determination on and off the ball.
