OPG crowned Honiton Netball League champions

With the top two Division One teams playing each other in the latest round of matches it was crucial for Flamingos that they picked up the three points to keep their title hopes alive when they met OPG, writes Graham Ingram.

It was a game where both centres were in fine form, Tracy Moran for OPG and Sonia Yorke for Flamingos.

OPG got off to a good start and were 10-7 up at quarter time, increasing the lead to 22-17 by half time.

As is often the case the third quarter proved crucial with OPG opening up a 35-23 lead before ending the game with a 47-30 victory that saw them clinch the title that Flamingos had won last year.

Hi Q met Signs South West with their security assured, but with SSW needing all the points they could muster to help them avoid the drop.

The first period was close with Hi Q 6-5 ahead. The second quarter was also close, but SSW were now 9-11 behind.

The third quarter saw the teams go goal-for-goal with the Emmas, Truscott for Hi Q and Bright for SSW in fine form. It all meant that, at the start of the final quarter Hi Q still led by two goals. However, the final period went Hi Q’s way and they finished as 26-20 victors to SSW back into a relegation spot on goal difference.

SSW found themselves back in a relegation position because Uplowman had picked up three points from their match against Sidmouth Toucans.

The game started evenly with Uplowman edging 7-5 ahead at quarter time, but by half way they were 23-10 to the good and from there they didn’t look back winning the game by 48-26 to move level on points with SSW but with a superior goal difference and a game in hand.

Emma Burrough played a big part in the Uplowman win whilst Sarah Burston had a good game for Toucans.

Uplowman’s final games are against Flamingos and SSW! The Uplowman versus SSW game could be the decider for who survives the drop.

In Division Two Tip Top Trees made sure of their promotion with a victory over potential promotion hopefuls Pixies.

With Asilah Jarrald having a fine game for Pixie the game started well for them, but in the third period 3Ts took control, thanks to great play from Emma Gillan and they ran out winners by 32-14.

The other promotion hopefuls fared better with JD Tyres picking up three points against bottom side Blackdown Ladies with a 27-16 win.

Once more it was Nicki Snell who was the Blackdown pick whilst Jenny Briant caught the eye for JD.

The other promotion hopeful Otter Valley Dairy picked up three points when they met Howden Hawks.

OVD led 6-5 at the end of the first quarter, but at half way were 11-9 behind thanks to good work for Meg Falkner for Hawks.

In the third period Charlotte Broom brought OVD to life and they drove on to win by 24-17 and become one of three teams on 29 points.

JD have two games left and meet Hawks and Tip Top Trees whilst both OVD and Pixies have the one game remaining with Pixies playing Hawks and OVD up against Blackdown Ladies – it’s all to play for and too close to call.
