Jo Pavey, 38, will revert to marathon running after a great Olympics where she proved herself the top European female distance runner.

Pavey, whose parents live in Feniton where she was brought up, was seventh in the 5,000m final, having been unable to warm up properly for that or for the qualifying race as her legs were still feeling the 10,000m final which she ran a personal best.

She said: “ It has been brilliant. I am thrilled with that.

“I am so glad to have had the chance of running again in front of this amazing crowd.

“It didn’t help that there was a lot of moving about in the qualifier which was a messy race. I wore two compression socks on my right leg for the final, I haven’t done that before. It was hard doubling up but I am glad I did it.”
