Two pony races start the card at the Eggesford point to point and the pack has been well and truly shuffled.
Michael Treneer gets the leg up on Bronze Lawrance who was a prolific winner last season, while his brother Barnaby rides Michael’s pony My Golden Dream. Megan Lawrence rides a new pony, Cottrell Red Admiral, while Tyler Heard, 9, has his first ride in a pony race on Fiona Shaw’s Ninfield Master Mink.
Master Mink, now 20, was the pony that got Fiona’s son George started racing and was a prolific winner in his teens so should prove the perfect schoolmaster for Tyler, who is the son of trainers Colin and Karyn Heard. Ravara Super Ted won at this course two years ago but had a year off last year after owner Imogen Darke, who was due to ride him last season, had a bad accident. Imogen will be cheering Super Ted on in her colours as he is being ridden this season by Anna Wotton. The pair were a close third in the Seavington pony races on Sunday and will be looking to go better this time.
Jake Bament has ridden some good races this season on Ginger Wizard and Elizabeth Langton is gaining a lot of experience in her first season, on Diptford Malika. But they will all have to contend with Bejowan’s Bouquet who is relishing the season with her lightweight partner Tina SMith who will be bidding for a hat-trick of wins.
While they all have to carry a saddle which weighs the minimum of 3lb dressed (including stirrups, leathers, girth and surcingle) punters must remember that the ponies are all carrying different sized riders and therefore different weights.
The 148 race has six runners entered and could prove a fascinating race. Multiple winner Tarka will be bidding to bring Bryony Frost’s last season to a successful climax, but Hannah Welch on Vadlawalkover knows that Tarka is beatable, having done just that on the stayer’s track at Great Trethew last time out.
Flareon is a good pony and has won on this track. She should go well but needs to get away cleanly at the start for Heidi Lewis. Lesaigles Delbosco is improving all the time for Barnaby Treneer. Chester Williams is having a second time out ride on his new young pony She’s So Cool and Pippa Glanville will be having her first ride in the Devon and Cornwall area on her new pony Petite Pois, having won on Sunday at Seavington.
This is a flat track though, and will be a different proposition from both Seavington and Great Trethew and it could prove a tactical race. The first pony race is off at 12 noon, the second at 12.20pm.
