A small group of Axe Valley Pedallers dodged the heavy showers on October 31 and cycled out along the estuary and up through Axmouth, determined to defy the weather for a Hallowe’en ride.

Leaving the main road they were soon on deserted leaf-strewn lanes leading up to Rousdon and onwards to the windswept top of Trinity hill.

Ominous clouds could already be seen gathering over Dartmoor so discussion of the route, usually a lengthy process, was much quicker than usual and the group scuttled straight down the hill through the threatening storm to the shelter of the gazebo in the garden of the Axminster Arts Café.

Here there was a welcome hot drink, served by the usual friendly witches.

It was only then that the tired cyclists noticed that they had been joined by the ghostly figure of an Ancient Mariner…

AVP Wednesday rides depart from Seaton Sea Front at 10am. Details at Axevalleypedallers.org.uk.
