Honiton Colts win ‘ugly’ at Tiverton

17:12 09 April 2014

Honiton Colts took the short trip across to Tiverton this weekend which ended with an ugly win, writes Paz Parratt.

Playing with a sparse squad the Lacemen received the ball to start the game and Tiverton were quick of the mark, Honiton found it hard to get out of their 22, and it was Tiverton to cross the line first as some useful blind side work caught the Lacemen napping.

With the conversion falling short the game was restarted. With Honiton having a very stern wakeup call they worked the ball well and played their way up field. It was Jake Smith to put the first Lacemens points on the board as he received following some good support play, Ross Oaten stepped up to the mark and landed a long distance kick to add the extras. The game appeared to be played with very little organisation and the structure was poor, it was Tiverton that looked to be in charge and for long periods of play they were the more deserved. Johny House managed to slip through the Tivvy defence and again Ross Oaten tucked away the conversion to increase the Lacemens lead. Tiverton never looked out of the game and answered quickly with another blind side try closing the half just two points down at 14-12.

Honiton began the second period once again looking ragged around the edges and it was all hands on deck to keep the home side away from any further points. The pressure was released when Ross Oaten broke through to cross the white wash under the posts leaving an easy conversion and sealing the game.

The rest of the game was played out knowing the Lacemen could have added further points, but they never came.

The colts are in action this Saturday when they host Crediton (2.15pm) in the next leg of the Devon Plate.
