Quarter Final of the Devon Cup

On a heavy pitch Honiton under-16s welcomed Newton Abbot to Allhallows to play the quarter final of the Devon Cup, writes Paz Parrott.

The Lacemen got off to a dreadful start and almost straight from the kick off a wide ball breeched the defence and they were reeling at seven points down. Honiton rallied and gradually got the measure of the opposition it what was never going to be a very open game.

Harry Wright clawed points back with a well struck penalty and just before the break Fin Parratt bludgeoned over to give Honiton and 8-7 lead at the break..

Having played against the famous slope, it was Honiton’s turn for the advantage and with the wind in their favour, despite some plucky rugby from the Abbots, the visitors just didn’t look like scoring.

Honiton didn’t help themselves by conceding more than their fair share of penalties but the “run it back” tactic were more than adequately dealt with. Johnny House broke the deadlock when he gathered his own chip to dot down out wide.

This gave Honiton that all-important eight point buffer. They kept up the pressure on the visitors and, on 25 minutes, Dean Patch effectively sealed the game off when he crossed following some good recycling from the forwards. The nail was bashed into the coffin with Wright knocking over the conversion.

Newton Abbot huffed and puffed and made a game of it but the match was effectively already won and Honiton ran out the clock to end up comfortable winners by 20 – 7.

This win books their place in the semi-final of the competition. Man of the Match was undoubtedly Richey Webber whose work rate was top draw but once again a strong all-round team performance.
