Honiton RFC 2nd XI 71, Cullompton 7

Honiton entertained their old foes Cullompton this week in a Merit table clash and ran in 11 tries to secure a pulsating 71-7 victory, writes Dan Churchward.

Playing down the slope in the first half, Honiton soon realised that the key to success would be to get the ball wide, and with this in mind the ball found its way to Dan Williams for his first of the game, converted by Lyndon Jones.

After a long interval due to a nasty injury for a Cullompton player, the game was moved to the top pitch and restarted in similar fashion, with Ash Shepard crossing over, again converted by Jones.

Honiton ran in a further four tries in the first half through Jones (2), Robert Price and Rhys McGrath, with Jones converting two of those to leave the score 36-0 at half time.

Cully started brightly in the second half and used their powerhouse forwards to crash over for a try.

Realising that their pack was starting to control things, Honiton went back to their game plan and got the ball wide, which resulted in a further three tries for Williams taking his personal tally to four, with Jones scoring another and McGrath crossing over once more.

Three of these were converted by Jones and one converted by Churchward, to leave the final score at 71-7 to the Lacemen.

This was a solid performance with several players playing out of position, revenge was gained and credit to the lads who stepped on the pitch.

Honiton have a week off next week as the annual 'Tour' takes place, this year in Nuneaton.
