The coaches wanted points on the board and good quality rugby - these objectives were more than met and the coaches, players and spectators all went home more than satisfied with the effort, the play and, of course, the result, writes John Hammill.

The points objective was achieved within minutes of the start with a well taken penalty by Harry West giving Sidmouth the lead and giving the team confidence.

The restart was run straight back at Teignmouth showing the ambition and intent of the Sidmouth team. Through several phases of play a determined Kyle Baker used his size and strength to cross the line.

Having scented success, Sidmouth turned up the pressure and, with superb instinct, Man of the Match Harrison Astley-Jones ran a delightful angle to cross the line.

Sidmouth’s forwards, well led by James Thomas, had obviously benefited from extra coaching lessons - they dominated both the lineouts and the scrums despite a size disadvantage. With the resultant possession the backs were able to take control and further tries from Ed Thomas and Reid Mawdesley gave Sidmouth a well-deserved lead at half time.

The second half showed a change in fortunes due to the fact that Sidmouth had travelled with just 15 players whereas Teignmouth had six substitutes. The fresh legs helped Teignmouth to grind out a forwards’ try and to start to threaten Sidmouth’s lead. However, Sidmouth showed character and re-asserted their control with a further tries by Mawdesley and Dan Powell. An opportunistic dropped goal taken by Richard Day completed the Sidmouth points.

This was a strong team performance showing some excellent handling by the backs and hard work by the forwards, with efforts like this the team can look to the games ahead with some confidence.
