Seaton men defeat ladies’ by five shots in annual match.

PUBLISHED: 07:05 14 May 2014

Last week’s action began with the Bank Holiday Monday meeting between the ladies’ and the men, writes Linda Stone.

The score was two rinks all, but the ladies lost overall by five shots. It proved a good early season practice game and was much enjoyed by all.

Last Wednesday Seaton Over-60s men’s A team trod new ground when they visited Okehampton - a round trip of 94 miles - to play Okehampton A.

Seaton adapted better to the blustery conditions and ran out winners by 36 shots (49-13).

The top triple was Ivor Steer, Ron Rowley and Les Tooze. Meanwhile, the C team played Tiverton and won 43-35 gaining all six points. The top triple was Reg Pluck, Peter Griggs and Roy Sykes.

Friday’s encounter was a home meeting with Heavitree. At tea time there was only one shot in it, but tea did us a power of good, and we won on all rinks post tea to claim a 100-65 success.

The top rink was Angie Mayhew, Alice Carter, Bob Scull and Ron Rowley.

Saturday’s friendly against Bradninch was cancelled due to heavy rain showers.

On Sunday the ladies’ sent a team to Honiton to play the first round of the Grace Matthews competition. All of the five disciplines were contested. Angie Mayhew won the two wood singles, and the pair’s match was won by Pat Whitworth and Di Morley. The four wood singles and the triples were both won by Honiton leaving the deciding rink game to be completed.

It was a nail-biting finish! After 19 ends Honiton were winning by three shots. Seaton took the lead by two in the 20th end. They consolidated this with a further shot on the last end giving Seaton the overall win. Mention must be made of the hot-shot achieved by Di Morley and Pat Whitworth on their final end.

The open mornings on May 10 and 11 were really well attended and enjoyed by many potential new bowlers. Coaching starts for new bowlers this Saturday (May 17) at 10am and there’s another session on Monday next (May 19) at 10.30am.
