Seaton Tennis Club’s Club Tournament Final’s Day, held last Sunday, was full of excitement as several matches were settled on championship tie-breaks, writes Belinda Bawden.

The men’s singles final was eventually won by Ian ‘Sketchy’ Broughton on a tie-break against Simon Prior while the men’s doubles title went to club coaches Derek Blackmore and Ben Elliott, being decided on a tie-break over rivals Kevin Davis and Sketchy Broughton.

The Ladies had slightly more straightforward contests with Jo Little playing superb tennis to beat Teresa Hancock in two sets and A team pair Julie Hopkinson and Nikki Keele running out comfortable winners against B team captain Belinda Bawden and her league team partner Carol Hurst. In the mixed doubles, Kevin Davis and Susan Green beat Teresa Hancock and her mixed B team partner Peter Moroz.

In the Plate singles competition, David Pillinger beat Grayson Newton and Alice Tremlett won against Susan Green. In the Ladies doubles, Susan Green (who showed great stamina in contesting three finals) and Jo Little beat Marion Nelson and Judith Ellard and in the Men’s Doubles, coaches Jason Martin and Pete Morton beat Dennis Rose and Brian Rodgers.

Last, but certainly not least, in the mixed doubles Carol Hurst and Belinda faced each other across the net this time with their partners Moby Hill and David Dower respectively, with Carol and Moby running out easy winners.

There was an excellent crowd of supporters and an all-day buffet of bacon baps, hot dogs and burgers to keep them refreshed. It was good for the club that so many team captains, committee members and coaches featured in Finals Day and the close matches between players in different leagues suggests good depth in the club’s team squads.

Four of the players in action on finals day are also coaches at the club; Ben Elliott (coach co-ordinator), Kevin Davis, Derek Blackmore, Jason Martin and Pete Morton.
