St John’s international school student 14-year-old William Fryer triumphed on the national badminton circuit at the Worcestershire Under-17 Bronze tournament.
Finding his feet in his first game the youngster went on to comfortably win his first round.
The quarters and semi-final resulted in a 21-10 and 21-9 win with Fryer playing some excellent shots. The match of the tournament however, was the final between Fryer and Aidan Gibbons who at 16 is the Avon County number One Under-17 seed.
Both players demonstrated high level skill as they battled out a fast and equal game. Gibbons led 20-18, but Fryer dug deep and, with a final burst of energy, took the next two points leaping into the air to attack with two impressive smashes.
The game ended on a forced error with Fryer winning 22-20.
Coach Richard Lane said: “Given that there were over fifty players in the singles draw this is an exceptional result for the teenager.”
