Warm weather and blue sky brings out the glider pilots at Devon and Somerset Gliding Club, writes Jill Harmer.

Dryer conditions meant winch launching was back in full swing at North Hill airfield this week. Many members were refreshing their gliding skills.

Although thermals were in limited supply, wind on the southerly ridge of the Blackdown Hills kept pilots aloft on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday, and there was an area of weak wave lift in the Broadhembury valley which extended many flights.

With the southerly wind on Saturday, John Burrow from Taunton flew his Ventus Turbo glider along the south coast at Sidmouth, in search of lift along the cliffs. Sadly the wind was not strong enough when he got there, so he used his retractable engine to return to North Hill.

Our Junior members were also out in force this weekend; amongst them, 15 year old Peter Bennett from Yeovil flew a beautiful vintage wooden K6 glider for the first time.

Luke Knight (16 years) has just joined the club following his family’s move to Sidmouth. He was a solo pilot at a gliding club in Wiltshire and after some refresher training, flew solo at North Hill on Sunday.

Our first trial lessons of the year have been booked. Elizabeth Westcott from Dulverton, flew on Sunday and already plans to take up gliding on a regular basis - and intends to go solo on her 14th birthday in July.
