Smiling faces at the Devon and Somerset Gliding Club Open Weekend

The Devon and Somerset Gliding Club’s Open Weekend last Saturday and Sunday had mixed weather, but a large number of visitors enjoyed their first flight in a glider, writes Jill Harmer.
The skies over North Hill were full of our two-seater gliders, providing trial lesson flights to members of the Public. Even with a curtailed day on Saturday due to the rain, 70 visitors had winch launches of up to 15 minutes over the Blackdown Hills. They were made welcome by our members and throughout the day, there were many smiling faces and promises to return during their three months temporary membership.
The youngest visitor was seven-year-old Joseph from West Hill who picked up the basic skills very quickly and can’t wait to come back to learn to fly when he is a little taller.
Our Task week had disappointing soaring weather apart from on the second Wednesday in a row, we had a really good cross-country day. Fifteen gliders including the Club DG505 - advanced trainer - lined up for launching. The task had been set as 300km from North Hill to Salisbury and round Whiddon Down back to North Hill.
The early launchers headed off quickly to Salisbury as there was an expected deterioration in soaring conditions from the south east. By the time they got past Sherborne it had become quite difficult with a lowering overcast cloud base. Pete Startup from Ottery St Mary and Wyn Davies from Topsham managed to turn at Salisbury and get back to the better conditions eventually continuing on to Whiddon Down and home.
The later launchers decided to reverse the task as there was evidence of sea air advancing over Dartmoor which might cut off the Whiddon Down turnpoint. Many found some good soaring between South Molton and Yeovil and revised their tasks. On this one day in May, DSGC members flew a total of 2500kms over southern England.
Congratulations to Wyn Davies for completing his Gold Badge and Diamond distance flight.
Mark Layton from Beaminster, also had a good flight completing his Silver badge and 100km Diploma.
