Woodbury Park entertained 120 players from 30 different clubs in the Ladies Open, writes John Bridgman.

Flowers placed at the first tee gave them all a welcome start to the day, and a small army of volunteers were at hand in reception and around the course to assist them.

A team and individual event went ahead in fine weather with a mixed team led by Woodbury’s Paula Cowl, winning.

The home team of Marleen Johnson, Gina Cox and Julie Chance finished in fourth place.

Julie Browne won the longest drive. In the Silver Division, Sara Beaven was first and Jan Morrison second, with Lyn Playford third.

The Bronze Division was won by Mary MaCassey with Marleen Johnson second and Kay Foster third. All of them are Woodbury ladies so, congratulations, all round eh!

This leads me to applaud the efforts of our lady captain, Sara Beaven who led by example to become the overall winner.

In the space of the competition she managed to be helpful, marshall her troops and even do a bit of ball spotting. Well done, lady captain, you’ve done us all proud. Much golf was played by the seniors’ on Captains Day when a stableford competition was won by Tony Marshall (40 points), from Roy Down and Andrzey Sobczak, both on 39 and separated by countback.

A Seniors Open, held in damp conditions, was won by Terry Tilbury with a score of 41 points. Edged into second place by virtue of countback after he also scored 41, was J Townsend and Bill Geddes claimed third with his score of 40.

That lead’s nicely to the ‘meat’ in the Woodbury park golfing sandwich this week - the coveted Club Championships This is played over two days in stroke-play for both men and ladies.

Adverse weather conditions affected the outcome for many as the days passed. A high number of players posted a ‘nil return’ for a variety of reasons. There are trophies for the best nett scores and the best gross scores.

The best nett by a lady went to Marleen Johnson and the men’s to Chris Bryant who, as a result, landed the Birchmore Cup.

The best gross score for a lady was won by Sara Beavon, and the men’s trophy went to young Tom Jessamine (for a hat-trick, third win in a row), and once again he won the Nigel Mansell Trophy.

We are all now looking forward to next weekend to enjoy some fun golf arranged by the captains to enable us to let our hair down, (for those that have any!)

Until the next time you can get out those clubs, happy whacking, cheers John.
