Upottery 9, Newtown 2
Upottery took their season’s goal tally to 81 and chalked up their 11th win of the Division Three season to edge ever nearer a promotion berth and a place in the third tier of Fresha League football next season.
Mind you, it need a half-time volley from boss Dan Prettejohn to turn a 2-2 interval score line into a healthy home success!
Steve Morris and Joe Jones both struck hat-tricks and shared the Man of the Match award. Den Scadden bagged a brace and Mark Tucker scored the other goal. Prettejohn said: “I walked into the dressing room at the break and told the players that it was simply not good enough and if they had anything about them they’d put it right in the second half. They certainly did just that”.
The villager’s chief added: “I must thank Honiton Town for their agreement to play us the week before I a much needed run-out. That certainly helped us in our bid to finish this season off well and get that coveted place in Division two next term.”
As for his team’s title hopes, Prettejohn says: “We have five left to play and clearly need to win them, especially the one against University who look to be the biggest threat to our title hopes.”
On Saturday Upottery travel to third bottom Tedburn St Mary.
