Honiton Town under 11’s made an Easter Monday journey to Tedburn St Mary to play their latest Exeter and District Youth League Division Three match, writes Stuart Ward.
After last week’s heavy defeat, Honiton were keen to make amends and took the game to their opponents straight from the kick-off. The midfield trio of Becky Rose, Will Whitworth and Ben Spence allowed little time and space to the host’s players and it was Spence who set up Matthew Ward for the opening goal.
Honiton then settled into their passing game and created several opportunities, with further goals coming from Ward, Rose (2) and Spence to see them lead 5-0 at half-time.
After the break Honiton were unable to find the same fluency, but goals from Ward, to complete his hat-trick, and Caleb Freemantle, either side of a solitary Tedburn strike, saw them finish the game 7-1 winners.
Indeed it was Freemantle, asked to play an unfamiliar defensive role, who took the player of the match honours.
The Monday fixture also saw a welcome return from Matthew Beviss, whose gymnastic commitments curtail him playing on a Saturday.
There’s a double header for the team this week with Saturday’s game at Ottery St Mary followed 24-hours later by a home game with Whipton.
