Drag Racing ace Mark ‘Wolfie’ Smith is back on the road this weekend and making a journey he hopes will be much less stressful than the one he made to the same location a couple of months ago.

Back in June Smith journeyed north to East Kirby in Lincolnshire to race in a ‘North versus South’ challenge match, but on the way his beloved camper van – a machine that goes everywhere he does in terms of the drag racing – broke down and he had to be relayed first to the meeting and then all the way back to east Devon once the meeting was completed!

However, thanks to some TLC (tender loving care) from Big Pauls of Cotford, the Sidbury garage, the ‘battle bus’ is back on the road and ‘as good as new’

‘Wolfie’ says: “Paul really is a genius and we now have a new water pump and power steering belt and I expect a much smoother trip north this time round.”

This weekend is round six of the ASCH Straightliner’s Challenge series. The event, billed as ‘The George Brown Memorial Sprint’ meeting, and will see all sorts of bikes from the 1950s in action on the Saturday before the latest of the Straightliner’s meetings the following day, a day that will once again see the top racers in the country going head-to-head for new record times.

On that last visit to East Kirby, ‘Wolfie’ clocked his current ‘top speed’ of 155mph and the winning time in the final up there was also the same as his current ‘best yet’ of 9.38, and he hopes to set new bests at both speed and time this time round.

He says: “Hopefully, with a stress free journey up there and good conditions over the weekend, I will be able to put pressure on that best time and fastest speed.”

‘Wolfie’ has seen life change over the past few months and he has another thing in his favour in terms of targeting new records this weekend for he will be riding over a stone lighter than when he was last on his bike!

He explained saying: “I’ve changed jobs and am now back working in the great outdoors with Bourne Leisure up at Devon Cliffs, Sandy Bay. Previously I was driving for a living and this new job gets me out in the fresh air with plenty of walking and the pounds have dropped off!

“I cannot thank my new boss [Phil Brenton] for the support he has given me for he has said I can have what time I need off in – pursuit of new records – something for which I am very grateful.”
