Woodbury Park golf latest - ‘From hospital bed to hole-in-one’ - that’s the Freeman way!

Woodbury Park was the scene of great excitement last weekend, writes John Bridgman.

n Saturday twenty-six teams of three set out in the latest competition.

The weather was kind and the sun shone for the most part as the team consisting of John Man, who has been successful a few times lately, Ken Vine, recently back after three weeks in the Antarctic, and Dave Freeman (all three are past captain’s and experienced golfers), took to the course.

Just over three weeks ago Dave Freeman, whilst playing the Oaks Course endured the nightmare of being struck down with chest pains and had to be helped from the course by the Woodbury park professional staff.

Paramedics stabilised him and he was taken to the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital where a subsequent investigation led to surgery the following week.

Not to be held back from what is his passion, he made a swift recovery to return to the course!

At the third hole, a par three, he played a low trajectory shot to the elevated green which bounced short, but scuttled up onto the green. At that time it was undecided as to where it had finished up. However, on reaching the green John Man, after pretending to look elsewhere other than in the cup, announced to Dave’s delight, that he had holed out in one!

The resultant tradition of drinks (covered by a fund to cover the cost), was enjoyed by those of us who celebrated Dave’s wonderful achievement.

The competition was won by Gary Bourne, Dave Cooling and Ryan James with 88 points. Second place went to Chaz Turner, Ian Dure and Chris Turner with 82 points.

In third, on countback, were Graham Murray, Peter Murray and David Dickinson.

The seniors were at it again the previous Monday in a stableford that resulted in a win for Geoff Aylett, Roy Barber and Alistair Robertson with 83 points.

Second were John Man, Mike Haddon and Peter Warner with 77 points and in third were Tim Rufus, Alan Stone, and Martin Creed with 76.

Another enjoyable week of golf it must be said, but once again well done to Dave Freeman, golfer extraordinaire!
