Honiton GC Challenge Trophy winners

At the start of his captaincy Paul Dimond could do no wrong, winning every competition he entered, a fact that started to become a little embarrassing.

How he must yearn for those halcyon days of yore. This week the embarrassment came by way of the Honiton Challenge Trophy, an inter section competition where the men play the ladies, play the seniors, play the juniors for the ultimate club bragging rights.

The winners would be the team that amassed the most number of Stableford points which this year were a very young team of juniors whose victory was all the more remarkable as they played without their designated captain, Ben Barton. Mention must be made of junior Josh Marshall (h’cap 41) who scored the day’s highest total of 40pts closely followed by Hannah Tierney (h’cap 44) who recorded 39pts.

Their total of 207pts pushed both the ladies and the seniors into joint second with 187pts leaving the men struggling last with 182pts.

The mini match within the day saw the ladies beat the men 5.5 to 4.5 leaving captain Paul to wonder where it had all gone wrong.

Tuesday Mixed Format this week was the tough Foursomes Medal Play, writes Andy Wagner.

Putting is crucial if you prefer your playing partner to tee off on the next hole! However, some good scores were recorded.

The winning pair with an excellent net 73 were Penny Blackburn and Andy Sharland. Only just losing out by half a point, second place went to Jennifer and Richard Pyle with net 73-1/2.

In third place were lady captain Jackie Seager and Paul Ritchie with net 75.

The mixed match season is now over. Well done to Jan and John Dickinson who organised these matches this year with many challenges due to the weather. However the final result was three matches won, two lost and one halved, two being cancelled in spite of being rearranged twice.

The course may have been wet, but the sun did shine on the Seniors as they played a Texas Scramble. There was some light-hearted grumbling when the winners were announced, as the seniors’ captain’s team won handsomely.

John Discombe with his partners Max Pipe and Fred Thomas came in with a net 61.6, almost three shots ahead of runners-up Pete Morgan, Malcolm Matthews and Howard Clayton. Mike Jones, Mike Stroud and Tony Proudfoot came third and the last prize went to Andy Sharland, John Hill and Ashley Murray.

Dave Morgan, next year’s clubcaptain, was presented with the Centenary Salver for recording the best four medal rounds through the summer period. He has played well all season and has regularly been in the prizes. Many congratulations, David.
