Preparations are well in hand for the Exmouth Players’ forthcoming production Curtain Up On Murder by Bettine Mantkelow. There’s very much a family feeing around the theatre as the group moves closer to the opening night this coming Monday (October 12).

Talented director Andy Jury, in addition to making sure that the cast don’t bump into the furniture, will also be seen on stage with wife Pauline - and there is plenty of action going on behind the scenes.

Producing a play is not just about the acting and members of the company who are prepared to organise scenery, props, costumes, lighting and sound, refreshments, ticket sales, publicity and so on, all of which are invaluable to the success of a production.

For Curtain Up On Murder, the players have another supportive husband and wife team on board, with stage management and front-of-house duties in the capable hands of Dudley and Margaret Whilden.

In recent years, tremendous improvements have been made at the Blackmore Theatre and the work, for the most part done by volunteers, is ongoing. The foyer area and box office are bright and welcoming and there are plans to re-vamp the bar area.

Meanwhile, recent changes made to the stage have taken the level down to the floor, giving a more flexible acting space and improved safety in the wings.

Stage manager Dudley – with the assistance of Nick Lawrence – has been building the set, and club members Wendy Bishop and Joyce Pomeroy have been wielding the paint brushes. Recycled wood from the old, dismantled stage has been used to build rostra for the next production.

All this effort and team work should ensure a production not to be missed.

Curtain Up On Murder runs from Monday, October 12 –Saturday, October 17, at 7.30pm at the Blackmore Theatre, Bicton Street, Exmouth. Tickets are £7 (Monday) and £8 (Tuesday–Saturday), available from Ticketline 07905 761485 and at the theatre. Details: www.blackmoretheatre.co.uk
