Colyton Grammar School’s foot-tapping production of Guys and Dolls was a sell-out success.

The show was enjoyed by packed houses on all three nights at The Gateway, in Seaton Town Hall.

The show was directed and stage-managed by head of drama Suzi Brownley, together with year 13 students Freya Bramble and Sasha Colwill, as part of their AQA Baccalaureate ‘Extended Project’. David House, Director of Music at Colyton, co-ordinated the music and the band.

Students from many year groups were involved in the production, which has music and lyrics by Frank Loesser and is based in turn on the writings of Damon Runyon, reflecting a New York of gamblers, small time crooks and habitués of Broadway and Brooklyn.

The musical premiered on Broadway in 1950, and has won the Tony Award for Best Musical, as well as being adapted into a well-known film in 1955.

After sell-outs on all three nights, Mrs Brownley said: “Being part of Guys and Dolls was a fabulous experience and I hope that everyone involved, and everyone who came to see it, enjoyed it as much as I did.”

Headteacher Paul Evans added: “This was a brilliant achievement and I very much hope that working closely with Seaton Gateway will become a regular event for us.”
