Jazz musician Tony Roberts and his Quintet will be playing at the Tuckers Arms to celebrate Tony’s 80th birthday.

Jazz musician Tony Roberts and his Quintet will be playing at the Tuckers Arms to celebrate Tony’s 80th birthday.

Multi-instrumentalist Tony Roberts will feature on sax, clarinet and flute, Matt Carter on piano, Richard Llewelyn on guitar, Ben Taylor on bass and Andy Chapman on drums,

The quintet will be playing a selection of tunes from the American Song Book, – Bossa Novas, Latins and 1950/60s ‘Blue Note.

Tony Roberts has had a long and illustrious career in jazz.

After six years as an army bandsman, including a year at RMSM Kneller Hall, he spent the ’60s in London performing, recording and broadcasting with the bands of John Dankworth, Humphrey Lyttleton, Stan Tracey, Mike Gibbs, Kenny Wheeler, Graham Collier, Ian Carr, Ray Russell and Henry Lowther.

He was also in demand as a sessions player, and provided saxophone and clarinet for the music of TV’s Bergerac.

After retiring, he developed a smallholding in East Devon and pursued the good life, while simultaneously working with folk guitarist John Renbourn and recording several albums.

He returned to full time music activity, working and recording with Donovan, Danny Thompson’s Whatever and Ray Russell’s Protocol, until semi-retiring to the Jurassic Coast, where he continues to practise and research the Art of Jazz.

The Tony Roberts Quintet will be performing on Saturday, April 22, at 8pm at The Tuckers Arms in Dalwood,
