Members of Thorncombe Rail Activities Club were treated to film and slides from amongst it own members at its January meeting, which was also it annual general meeting.

It was reported that the club continues on a steady footing both in terms of members and funds, and although visitor numbers were down for the Model Railway Exhibition in November, the event more or less broke even.

After the club business was complete, there was a short video and still pictures of a driving and firing turn on the Bulleid Pacific locomotive Eddystone which took place on the Swanage Railway last October.

The company that restores the locomotives, Southern Locmotives Ltd, offers these visits to shareholders, of which the Club is one.

David Brabner showed two DVDs incorporating the best bits of his very varied travels in 2011 to modern and preserved railways both in the UK and Europe. Despite the unpleasant weather, the audience wouldn’t let him leave until they had seen both.

The February meeting will feature a talk by Alan Corwood on Railway Memorabilia.

Non-members are very welcome, with visitors paying a small entrance fee.

It will take place at Thorncombe Village Hall, at 7.30pm, on Wednesday, February 20.

A cappella group Voces 8 gave a magical Christmas candlelit concert at Budleigh Salterton's St Peter’s Church.

From the moment when the strains of Once in Royal David’s City soared into the hushed and darkened church and the singers of Voces8 proceeded down the aisle bearing lighted candles, it was clear that Budleigh Music Festival’s Carols by Candlelight concert was a very special occasion indeed.
