A house in Offwell was evacuated in the early hours of this morning (Wednesday, February 7) after a car crashed into it, trapping the driver.

The emergency services were alerted at about 12.19am. Firefighters from Honiton and Axminster attended along with police and ambulance crews.

They vehicle had collided with the house near the A35, causing a corner of the building to collapse. Fire crews asked for the Heavy Rescue Vehicle from Middlemoor to provide extra stabilisation equipment.

The man was freed from the car and the occupants of the house were evacuated for safety reasons.

The A35 remained closed in both directions for a few hours, but reopened at about 5.30am. Temporary traffic lights will remain in place for the rest of the day as the recovery operation continues.

There are no further details of the car driver at this stage.
