Scarecrows will be on display on the streets of Axminster in May as the town’s Chamber of Commerce plans a trail to celebrate two substantial food events.

Businesses and householders can get involved by creating and displaying at the ‘Axminster Scarecrow Trail’ which runs from Monday May 13.

The scarecrows will remain on display as the town goes on to celebrate the first  of this summer’s ‘Axminster Eats’ pop-up street food markets on Friday 24th May followed at the other end of the Bank Holiday weekend by the ‘Axminster Gate to Plate’ food festival on Monday 27th May.

The event is being coordinated by Axminster Chamber of Commerce Treasurer Alison Hayward. ”We are hoping that we will have both the town centre and wider residential streets covered with scarecrows for what will be one of the big weekends in the local calendar.

“We will also by that point have our street banners on display and our community picnic tables will be in place on the Minster Green. Put all that together and you should have Axminster at its very best over that weekend and in the run-up.”

To join the Scarecrow Trail email to secretary@axminster.biz to register your details. You will then be invited to make a scarecrow to your own design and have it ready for display either outside your home/business premises or in a window.

You can also take a photo of it to share on social media or submit for the Chamber to share. Some will then be chosen for display on the Chamber’s stand at Axminster Gate to Plate.

The chamber is aiming through the summer to add up to ten new banners to its existing collection of 26 that have brightened the town centre over the past two years.

Special emphasis will be placed this year on South Street which will join West Street, Trinity Square, Victoria Place, George Street and Chard Street in displaying banners.

Each banner tells a story from Axminster’s past or celebrates special the special strengths of today’s community.
