Frozen ground and flooded valleys - a look back in the archives

As we move on from the festivities of Christmas and celebrating the New Year, January is not always viewed as the best of months, with short days and long nights.

It is also a month when the climate is not always at its best.

While there can be crisp, frosty days, the weather in this part of the world can bring stormy nights of rain and, perhaps less often, snow.

Many factors affect the British weather, with the Gulf Stream, Jet Stream and even tropical rain all having an influence.

We have taken a look through the archives to see the after-effects of some inclement weather in January 2003, some of which left snow on the ground, whilst, on other days, the rivers rose to flood nearby fields.
