Big turnout expected at the annual harbourside service
Members of Lyme Regis powerboat club, the gig club and the sailing club are all expected to take part in this year’s Blessing of the Boats service at the resort’s RNLI lifeboat station on Sunday (May l).
The inter-denominational service, led by representatives of local churches, starts at 3pm and all are welcome to attend.
Hymns will be accompanied by the Lyme Regis Town Band.
The service, to remember those lost at sea, will be attended by a large number of the volunteer lifeboat crew.
Wreaths will be carried by members of the three nautical clubs, and at the end of the service the wreaths will be taken aboard the lifeboat by the crew.
The lifeboat, Spirit of Loch Fyne, will then be escorted into the bay, from the harbour mouth, by a powerboat to the wreath laying area at sea.
The RNLI operates more than 230 lifeboat stations in the UK and Ireland and has more than 100 lifeguard units on beaches around the UK. Since it was founded in 1824 its lifeboat crews and lifeguards have saved more than 137,000 lives.
