An Axminster flood victim is calling for action after being forced from her home due to the devastating floods last month.

Liz Gardner and her husband, Dave, are currently living in temporary accommodation in Charmouth and will not be able to move back into their home for approximately four months.

“We need action so it doesn’t happen again,” she says.

Mrs Gardner told the Midweek Herald that flood defences and the River Axe itself needs to be looked at and she questioned whether the river needs dredging.

The experience has been very upsetting and distressing for the family, especially when they went back to their home and saw the devastation left behind. “It was bad enough for us, let alone for elderly residents,” she added. “The emergency services and everyone from the insurance company have been brilliant in helping us.

“We cannot fault all their kindness.

“People have been very, very helpful.”

Fund-raisers came out in support of flood victims in the town last week.

The Rotary Club of Axminster raised 756 for the Axminster Flood Relief Fund during a street collection and added further monies bringing the total to 1,000.

John Hewson, of the Rotary Club, said: “We would like to thank the people of Axminster and visitors to the town for their generous support.”
