Lifeboat and helicopter called to rescue 45-year-old man from the sea off Axmouth
A 45-year-old kayaker had to be airlifted to hospital after falling overboard in rough seas off Axmouth last night (Sunday).
Lyme Regis lifeboat and the Portland-based Coastguard rescue helicopter were scrambled to help the man.
He was first taken aboard the Spirit of Loch Fyne and given immediate first aid treatment by the crew for the effects of the cold.
Minutes later he was winched from the lifeboat to the helicopter and taken to hospital in Dorchester.
Volunteer lifeboat helmsman Dave Street said: ”The sea was pretty rough and the casualty was suffering badly from the effects of the cold conditions.
“The helicopter was soon on the scene and winched the man up from the lifeboat.”
The volunteer lifeboat crew included helmsman Dave Street, Jon Broome, Tim Edwards and John Gage.
