Colyton medical student will work to improve health care in Zanzibar

A MEDICAL student from Colyton is looking for sponsors to help fund her African aid mission.

Amy Price, a former Woodroffe School student, is planning to do voluntary work in Zanzibar for four weeks this summer.

She will be working as part of a team from the charity One Heart Source, which provide health education for people living in impoverished countries.

Amy, who is studying medicine at St Andrew’s University, Fife, said: “Zanzibar is a country which is faced with a crippling AIDS epidemic and which has devastating health statistics.

“Just providing basic healthcare information can make a big difference to people in such desperate circumstances and can help them stay safe and break the vicious cycle of poverty and disease.

“I’m hopefully going to go out there at the end of June, and I’ll be teaching health education in schools and in the community. I’ll also be living in a home stay with local people, in order to be fully integrated with the community and to try and make as much of a difference as possible.”

But before she can go Amy needs to raise 1,600 to meet her expenses and is hoping the local community will help.

She said: “This is something that I feel really strongly about, and I’m really looking forward to putting my all into it and trying to help.

“I would be really grateful if people sponsor me, any sum will be very much appreciated. All the money you donate will go to One Heart Source.”

Amy, who has already started learning Swahili, says people can find out more about how to help by visiting her just giving home page at (http://www.charitygiving.co.uk/amypriceforohs)
