Don’t let longer nights around Chritsmas be a gift for burglars, warn officers

POLICE at Seaton are warning residents to beef up their winter security following a big rise in monthly crime figures.

Officers dealt with 19 reported incidents last month – almost double the number recorded during the same period the previous year.

But they stress that overall crime figures continue to fall against the average for November over the past eight years, which is 25.

And for the year to November 30, total reported crimes are down to 172 compared with 197 for the same period last year, a reduction of 13 per cent..

Officers say people need to be aware that the darker evenings provide more opportunities for thieves.

PCSO Chris Bolsover told The Herald: “Now that the clocks have gone back and it is getting darker earlier, we ask people to please take extra care to ensure their home and belongings are safe.

“Although burglary in Devon and Cornwall is low compared to other areas of the country, the risk of this type of crime traditionally peaks at this time of year.

“The majority of burglaries are caused by opportunists who steal from homes where windows are left open or doors are left either open or unlocked. To avoid the consequences of becoming a victim of crime during this traditionally vulnerable time we would urge everyone to think about the risks and remain vigilant.”

Police advise people to:

* Keep windows and doors secure at all times.

* Keep presents and valuables from outside view.

* Keep garages and sheds securely locked.

* Security mark gifts and valuables with postcode and house number. Register items using the free service: www.immobilise.com which enables police to identify the owner of valuables if they are stolen.

* Dispose of all boxes and packaging carefully, particularly from expensive presents, and do not leave it on show outside the house
