Massive clean-up under way at Smeatharpe race track.

A massive clean-up is under way at Smeatharpe race track - ahead of a memorial event, being held to pay tribute to banger racer David Weare on Sunday.

Volunteers are removing graffiti and repairing damage, caused during a vandal attack.

They want to ensure the track is in tip top condition before Sunday.

Mr Weare, 43, was tragically killed at Hednesford last weekend.

The Number 78, who lived with wife Sue and their two children in Dunkeswell, was well-known in banger racing circles and grew up locally.

He was educated at Honiton Community College and formerly worked at Ottermill. More recently, he was a line manager at G4S.

He was a respected member of the community.

Tributes have been paid by friends and colleagues.

John Crowe said: “We waved to each other every morning on the way to work for the last 8 years.. will miss that so much now .

“Before that 14, years at Ottermill... What a laugh we had.

“I am SURE I speak from all at Ottermill when I say to your loving family that ALL our thoughts are with you at this such sad time.”

Mike Ridgley said: “My heart goes out to his wife and children at this very sad time.

“Dave will be sadly missed by everyone within the banger community.

“An accident which we all wish never happened.

“R.I.P. Dave and we will make sure your name lives on forever.”

Former Honiton Community College classmate Lorraine Clarke said: “Dave, you will be sadly missed. You were always the life and soul of any party and we will raise a glass for you at our third school reunion on October 15.”

Volunteers are required all day today at Smeatharpe. If you can help, turn up between now and 5.30pm to lend a hand.
