Audiences intrigued by the sounds of ancient instruments like the crumhorn, cornamuse and rackett
THE WOODROFFE School’s Early Music Group took their special sounds on tour last week.
They braved the weather to perform at three historic Dorset settings – Portland Castle and two venues in Abbotsbury, St Catherine’s Chapel and St Nicholas’ church.
The mini-tour gave the students, and some former members of the group, the chance perform their repertoire in beautiful and historic buildings, contemporary with the music.
Musical director, history teacher John Seabrook said: “We are very grateful to English Heritage, and to Rev Whittock at St. Nicholas, for the opportunity, and to our audiences for their support. Students enthused about the wonderful acoustics in all three locations. It was a rewarding way to end a busy year for the group.”
The music ranged from the early Middle Ages through the Renaissance to the 18th Century and the folk tradition, and audiences were intrigued by instruments such as the crumhorn, cornamuse and rackett.
Kathy Elliott, who helped organise the tour, said that it was a tribute to John Seabrook’s commitment that the group has now been performing for over 20 years.
