AXMINSTER rifleman Ray Coombes has earned two top awards after finishing his army training.
Ray, 28, has successfully completed the 26 week combat infantryman's course at the Infantry Training Centre in Catterick, North Yorkshire.
The former Axe Valley Community College student won Best at Physical Training and the Best Recruit prize.
Platoon commander Captain Till Timmermann said: "He has put in an exceptional effort in all his training. Many other recruits have been motivated by his performance and he has often been seen to be helping others."
Ray said: "I have enjoyed my time at the Infantry Training Centre and especially the physical demands that come with the job.
"I have learnt a lot about myself and what I can do, especially during difficult conditions such as on field exercises."
After some leave, Ray will be posted to the 1st Battalion The Rifles in Chepstow.
