Devon and Cornwall police have warned people of a technique, called skimming, where lawbreakers install equipment on legitimate ATM machines.

The equipment allows both a person's card number and pin to be transmitted wirelessly to criminals likely to be lurking nearby.

Dave Cudlip, crime prevention officer, said: "Taking simple steps like concealing the key pad when entering your pin and being aware of anything unusual about the ATM will help reduce the criminals' chances of success. Also, being aware of what is going on around you and ensuring there is no-one standing too close is a good habit to get into."

Police said there were a number of additional steps which could be taken to reduce the chance of becoming a victim of fraud. They included making sure you are not being watched.
