RESIDENTS are set to shape Axminster's future - as they help decide how the town council's money should be spent.

A first-of-its kind public meeting in Devon has been organised for the public to decide how 120,000 should be distributed.

The funds, from financial contributions from past developers, are to be used for play and recreation facilities.

At the same meeting, led by Councillor Jeremy Walden, residents will be able to suggest funding for improvements in the town centre, such as works of art or benches.

Councillor Jeremy Walden said: "If this system had been had been in place in Exeter there wouldn't have been so much contention about the Heavitree Arch development.

"We wanted to involve people and organisations as early as possible as there is a time limit of 10 years to spend the money."

One of the main proposals to be voted on at the meeting is to extend the football field at Millwey Rise.

Although the land belongs to the council and is expected to be turned into a cemetery in 15 to 20 years time, it could be used as a public playing field.

Ideas suggested at the meeting will be considered by the council, with the help of East Devon District Council officers, and shortlisted before a vote is held.

The meeting will be held on Tuesday, April 21, at the Guildhall, at 7.30pm.

Ideas can also be sent to Town Clerk at The Guildhall, West Street, Axminster.
