In response to Mr Walden's letter, can I make a few points? East Devon District Council are not conducting a consultation. There has been no opportunity to support the unitary option in the taxpayer-funded propaganda they have issued - nor have they even pretended to put the other side of the case. The unitary option was not proposed by the Liberal Democrats or Devon County Council, but by the independent Boundary Committee. Devon County Council has spent less money across the whole county than East Devon has in just our part. The cost of doing something in local government should always be considered. Taxpayers deserve better treatment from their politicians than writing a blank cheque to lawyers in order to achieve political aims. Given these last two points, claiming Devon has been "steamrolling" the unitary option, is clearly completely untrue. We do agree on one thing. Voters will have the opportunity to decide, eventually, on the council's actions. If the elections had been a bit closer I doubt this colossal waste would ever have happened. The ballot box does rather concentrate the mind! Jon Underwood Millmead Axmouth
