This weekend's Axminister Carnival has been postponed until October following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

The Axminster Carnival Commitee released a statement which said: “Unfortunately, the Axminister Carnival Committee have been advised to postpone our carnival which was scheduled for this coming Saturday, 17th September.

“This is due to the current circumstances surrounding the sad passing and State funeral arrangements of HRH Elizabeth II.

“The coffee morning on Thursday 15 and our bingo on Friday 16 will still go ahead as planned. As well as this, the Misplaced Article competition will continue during the week, and Herbert’s FunFair will be open Tuesday - Saturday from 5pm.

“However, in true carnival spirit, the show must go on and we are delighted to confirm our carnival will now take place on Saturday, October 15, 2022, at 8pm.

Carnival week was set to take place with a coffee morning on Saturday, September 17 until September 23. It has now been postponed until a new date in October.

The main event of course is the procession on Saturday night (September 17) at 8pm which will go around the town starting and finishing at Tesco, heading through Trafalgar Way, through West Street and Membury Street.

It would have been the first event to take place since 2019, with the carnival being cancelled in 2020 and 21 due to the pandemic.

Axminster Carnival group was set up to continue the tradition which has existed in Axminster for over 100 years. Directors and committee members organise and fundraise to host the parade. It is part of the East Devon Carnival Circuit.

“We thank you all for your understanding, and we hope to see you when the carnival returns in October.”
