A woman from Willand is appealing for people to donate generators to help a Ukrainian village. Geraldine Ogle has a Ukrainian friend who is living in Willand with his sponsors and has long standing friends of twenty years in Uffculme. He is a professional engineer working locally and sending money back to his family in Chernigov in north eastern Ukraine, close to and north of Kiev. It is a large and very important town that was one of the first to be invaded by Russia in February. There is still constant shelling and there is sparse and intermittent electricity. Temperatures are already sub-zero and could reach minus 20 degrees this winter. The large town badly needs lots of generators. They have been offered one generator for free. Sadly, many, many generators will be needed and will have to be taken to Ukraine. Without generators, people will have virtually no power or ability to withstand the bitter temperatures of winter. Children are being taught online as it is too dangerous for them to be in school due to the constant shelling. Nickoli leaves for Chernigov on December 1 for a month to visit his wife and children thanks to his local Devon employer who is allowing him to work from home for a month. Geraldine Ogle told the Herald: "If there is anyone who can help that would be wonderful. We need a lot of generators. If you have upgraded your old generator, could you please donate it, if you have an old one but still in working order, can you please donate it and can you please spread the word as much as you can and as quickly as you can. “We also need offers of dry and secure storage, and also help with transport to Kiev, where they can be collected, or to the border with Poland if this is not possible. We have been in touch with an MP, who has personally driven a truck with generators to Ukraine and he is very supportive. "This would be a wonderful way for local people in Devon to be able to help Ukrainian people directly during this terrible time as we approach Christmas."
