Hawkchurch C of E Primary School have been working with Axminster Community Shed to build a new 'friendship bench' at the school.

The structure, built using natural and recycled materials along with planters and a bird box was officially handed over by members of Axminster Community Shed on Wednesday December 14, with eldest attending student Millie Best, cutting the festive tinsel.

The school have spent the last few months working alongside members of Axminster Community Shed, in order to create the structure, which can be used in all weathers.

Head Teacher Christopher Threlfall said: “We were delighted to have been successful  in obtaining the grant from East Devon District Council, and it has been an absolute pleasure working with the gentlemen at Axminsters Community Shed in order to create this wonderful outdoor seating area for the children, which is a further enhancement on the amazing resources at the primary school.

"We are incredibly grateful to all involved, and hope that students will be able to enjoy the structure for years to come.”

Axminster Community Shed is a place where men and women with time to spare, can chat, connect and create - and offers a space where you can meet like minded people and new friends while also using your skills to help your community.

The initiative plays an important role in helping to overcome loneliness and isolation, especially among retired people.
