East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, (AONB), has announced the events it will be hosting to celebrate its 60th anniversary.

The first event, 'Poetree in the Park', will take place at Shute, near Axminster on Saturday February 25 from 10.30am until 12.30pm. This will launch East Devon AONB’s 60th birthday programme.

Organisers say: "Enjoy the embers of winter as spring begins to cloak the landscape.

"Step back in time and experience a rare chance to explore the medieval deer park and meet celebrated 900 year old oak, King John’s Oak and other veteran wild residents on a guided walk with Graham Jones, local ancient tree enthusiast."

"Graham will help us identify trees by their buds and bark. Enjoy the sights and sounds of winter wildlife and be inspired if you wish to share a favourite tree or wildlife poem with the group."

All ages are welcome and there will be children's activities. This is a free event and booking is essential.  Details of parking are given on booking.

Deer Park Battle of the Bramble - Practical Conservation Task will also take place in Shute, near Axminster on Saturday 25 February between 2pm and 4pm

Organisers say: "Call for volunteers to carry out a practical task. Shake off the winter blues and help clear overgrown vegetation to free recently planted trees in Shute medieval deer park, which are currently choking in bramble.

"It's also a great chance to meet older residents in the medieval deer park. New young oak trees in the last decade have been planted which will replace the centuries old oak trees when these older residents eventually die."

Gloves, tools, and hot drink will be provided. Task led by Tom Bush, arboriculturist at Windsor Great Park and Ruth Worsley, East Devon AONB Wildlife Engagement Officer. Booking essential.
