Axminster’s George Hotel was temporarily evacuated on Saturday night (March 4) after a small fire in the kitchen.
Staff discovered the minor fire underneath the griddle and reported it to the fire service, but were able to extinguish it themselves. Fire crews from Axminster, Colyton and Lyme Regis attended, confirmed that the fire was out, and used a ventilation fan to clear the property of smoke. One member of staff was treated for smoke inhalation, but no-one was injured.
The hotel’s management were praised by the fire service for their handling of the incident. They were unable to open the kitchen yesterday (Sunday, March 5) while further checks were carried out, including a full commercial gas safety inspection, but everything was back to normal today (Monday, March 6).
The management have thanked the fire crews for their quick response to the incident.
