Axminster Choral Society's Bach Premiere has been a hit with local residents.

Axminster and District Choral Society performed St Matthew Passion by C.P.E. Bach for the first time since 1789 on April 1.

Reviews of the play included: "A fantastic concert’, ‘a superb evening’, ‘a privilege to have been present’

The concert featured the UK première of a St Matthew Passion by CPE Bach, dated 1789, along with other works by this less well known son of the more famous JS Bach. The choir was supported by professional soloists and orchestra, to produce an enjoyable and memorable performance.

The second son of Johann Sebastian Bach, Carl Philipp Emanuel was appointed director of music for all five of the Hamburg churches in 1767.

Part of the job description was to compose a setting of the Passion every year. But C.P.E. Bach was never to see a performance of this work, dying in December 1788, three months before it received its première.

Rehearsals for the Society’s summer concert of opera choruses will begin on April 25th at 7.30 in the Minster Church, Axminster. New members are welcome to our friendly unauditioned choir.
